A Photo Journey Through Varanasi

Kashi, the ultimate place to attain Moksha – liberation from the cycle of rebirth, the divine destination for salvation. This ancient city has been the silent observer of the happiness and sorrow of its residents for ages. Countless such stories are probably etched on the walls of these old buildings, on the stones of the narrow lanes and on the stairs of the Ghats. The Ghats stood as the visual testimonial of affluents while the Ganges, without any discrimination, washed away every sin and every associated story. In this way, time and the river flowed by and the city matured into what it stands today with newness engulfed in the tight embrace of the powerful old arms.

When the city is of such eminence you find a rich history in every monument and structures in every lane and by-lane. It seems every brick and stone of every fort, Haveli and house here have their story, every road, lane and the narrowest of by-lane have a history that is rich and eventful.

The ancient, the famous, the holy, the busy and the popular city of Varanasi is a destination of a different taste – photographer’s paradise, holy men’s den, the utopia of faith and religion. Every individual have their own liking and disliking yet a definite reason to visit Varanasi, as I had my own. Varanasi makes an everlasting impression on the visitors and captivates them with her own mystic charm.

Ganga Aarti of Varanasi

Varanasi is an ancient city by the banks of the holy river Ganges, often personified as Ganga or Ganga Maiyan by the Hindus. The origin of this perennial, transboundary river is in Uttrakhand where the water from the melted snow of Gangotri, Satopanth and Khatling glacier along with the water from the snowy peaks of Himalaya joins the course to form the Ganges. Ganga then flows south and finally towards the eastern part of India to meet the Bay of Bengal nourishing lives and providing livelihood to many along its course. And Ganga Aarti is an integral part of the worship of Goddess Ganga.
